Why you need to choose a blog niche?

Before you head on to find your niche in blogging you need to know why it is important to choose the right blogging niche.

Picture this:

Your hobby is gardening and you searched online for how to grow roses with stem" and a blog popped up that solved your doubt with a detailed step by step guide to growing roses with stems.

You are impressed… to the point that you subscribed for their email newsletter to get notified of future new posts.

A day later you get an email about a post on how to engage twins during summer.

It's a bummer since you're single but you still decide to ignore it and stay subscribed.

Two weeks later you get another notification of a new post talking about a political issue.

What would you do now?

Noticing the huge array of blog topics covered by that blog (most of which are outside of your interest zone) you finally unsubscribe.

That's how important choosing a blog topic or getting focused on what to blog about is.

A blog catering a multitude of topics is just like jack of all trades and master of none.

It fails to attract a loyal audience who are eager to learn from what you blog and buy products you recommend.

Besides credibility, a blog with a targeted niche helps you sell more since the core content strategy would be laser-focused for a specific audience.

Why choose a blog niche? 4 benefits
Benefits of choosing a blog niche

Other benefits of choosing a blog niche:

  • A niche makes your blog relatable and easy to follow.
  • Expertise = ⭡ rankings: It boosts your blog's topical authority (authority over a single topic) which helps in search engine optimization (SEO), meaning a single niche blog will have better chances to rank on Google than a multi niche blog for a specific query.
  • Better monetization: A well-defined target audience is easy to sell than a blog whose readers aren't interested in any particular topic.
  • Audience that converts: Since niche blogs talk about a specific topic, you will be able to leave behind the uninterested ones and only interested readers will follow you along. These are the readers who want your advice, tips and opinion to solve their issues. Hence, they are more likely to become your fans, subscribers community members.

Got an idea?

Let's move on…

What is a blog niche?

Wondering what is a blog niche?

A blog niche is the topic or subject your blog articles will be based on.

For example; you might ask me, "What do I like?"

I'd say, "I like to listen to music."

Hence 'music' is a niche, it helps specify what I like from a pool of other things like gaming, watching movies, playing sports, reading books and so on.

You might again ask me, "What type of music do I like?"

I'd say, I love listening to Rock music! This, again specifies what I like 'particularly.'

Therefore, if I decide to start a blog on what I like, it's niche can be based on Music or specifically on Rock Music (which can be a sub-niche of the topic music).

Later on, with my blog, I can capture the attention of audience who have similar interests like mine i.e., Music or Rock Music especially.

Let's take the example of my blog…

… My blog DigitalGYD talks about what is blogging and publishes blogging tips and strategies to start and grow your blogs. So, DigitalGYD's niche is blogging.

Similarly, AndroidAuthority.com talks about android phones, so their niche is smartphone niche or android smartphones to be more specific.

Now that you have a fair idea of how important niche-ing down your blog is, let's explore further on how to do this efficiently.

Market vs Submarket vs Niche vs Micro Niche

Before we talk about blogging niches, we need to talk about where "niche" stands in the hierarchy.

Ever heard of the saying " think big "?

Well, in niche research, we have the exact opposite, " think small ".

Why?

This section will answer that and prevent you from considering a market as a niche or vice versa.

Make sure to go through it to get a crisp idea of where to find your niche sweet spot to create a profitable niche website/blog.

Diagram Showing Market vs Niche
Market vs Sub-market vs Niche vs Micro Niche

What is a market?

Market is a very broad or say extensive segment about any particular topic or aspect of business.

For example,

  • Health
  • Wealth
  • Automotive
  • Technology
  • Relationship

Did you notice?

It's obvious these are all very broad topics that can be further divided into more smaller categories for better targeting.

If you try starting a blog in these topics, you'll inevitably fail because:

  • It comes with fierce competition: Think of competing with The Balance group of media sites or think of competing with Forbes for business.
  • Lack of resources: Launching a blog targeting an entire market will require a huge investment in terms of content production, SEO, team managing sites etc.
  • Low profitability: Markets have loosely targeted audience as compared to niche blogs and hence low conversion rates.
  • You stay in red ocean: We'll talk about why red ocean is dangerous for your blog and why you should use the blue ocean strategy to find your unique blogging niche.

What is a sub-market?

A sub-market is a subsection of a market that focuses on a condensed and a single aspect of a market.

Below are a few sub-market ideas:

  • Health » weight loss, diet, sexual wellness, mental health
  • Wealth » investments, loans. budgets, business
  • Relationships » Dating, marriage, sex

These might seem to be narrow enough to be a perfect niche for your blog but actually they aren't.

What is a niche?

A niche is a specialized section of a sub-market that caters to the interests and demands of a specific section of audience.

The next in hierarchy comes niche which is what we need to focus on today. Niches are sufficiently narrow than markets and sub-markets.

If you choose the right niche, there is a fair chance to succeed with your blog (given you put the hard work required to grow a blog).

Unlike micro niches (discussed below), niches give you sufficient room for expanding your blog to increase the opportunity of topics covered.

What is a micro niche?

A micro niche is a very limited topic, often revolving around a single product/topic.

For example,

Bestairfryer.com would be a good example of a micro niche blog focusing on air fryers.

Or beststandingdesks.com would be another example of a micro niche blog on standing desks.

Micro niche blogs have very low competition and are easier to rank and bank (monetize).

But if you are considering long-term blogging, this probably isn't the way to go. Micro niche blogs are very limited and you will run out of content ideas very soon.

Another disadvantage of micro niche over niche blogs is with limited content opportunities you also limit the revenue growth.

Now that we've bottled down on types of blog niches…

…let's discuss about how to find a profitable niche for your blog

Shall we?

Here are 10 steps to find your niche in blogging:

  1. Take the what should I blog about quiz
  2. Use Amazon to generate blog niches
  3. Use Wikihow to pick a blog niche
  4. Checkout PayPal to get hidden niches
  5. Use James Altucher's Idea Sex Formula

  9. Use Pat Flynn's proven 777 method

  11. Other resources to find blog niche ideas

It's now time to address the elephant in the room…

How to decide what to blog about?

In this section I will show you 11 methods to come up with profitable blog niche ideas.

1 Take the what should I blog about quiz

The best way to choose a niche for long term blogging is to analyze your personality, your interests, your expertise and skills.

The resultant blog niche ideas will be the ones that will actually excite you to work on and bring results.

But,

How to take a quiz to choose your niche?

Take a piece of paper (or a note-taking app on your PC/Smartphone) and answer the following questions.

If you come up with multiple answers, jot them on the paper, don't limit your options.

Here are the five questions that form the what should I blog about quiz :

  1. What are the things or fields you're interested in? (Like social media, photography, cooking etc. Don't be miserly, choose at least 15-20 options for this)
  2. Out of the above answers, what are you really good at? (skills that you think are appreciated by your friends and family)
  3. Now, out of these, what options you enjoy doing most? (You might be good at photography but cooking is what you're more passionate about. Order the options from question #2 in the order of your love for them)
  4. Of all the options you have from question #3, what options have some demand for? (Like have you read about those online or in magazines? Do friends and family ask your help in these field? For example, do you get asked how to get the best lighting for a selfie or how to make french toast easily?)
  5. Is someone going to pay me for the skills I have? (This part of the niche finder quiz decides if there is profitability in your chosen interest list.

You'll notice…

That you'll run out of ideas find you have less options with you. Don't worry. Give yourself a good half-day and you'll see you have ideas that previously didn't come to you for the niche questionnaire.

Now, what if I don't have particular answers to the above questions?

Don't worry!

2 Use Amazon to find blog niche ideas. Here's how!

Amazon is an excellent source for finding profitable niche ideas for affiliate marketing and otherwise, and I personally use it often to come up with niche ideas.

Amazon affiliate sites are one of the best niches for blogging but you can also use them to come up with blogging ideas that have other monetization options.

There's a two-way approach to do this; though both similar and have their own advantages.

Approach 1: Check Amazon's full store directory

Amazon sells a massive amount of products; based on multiple categories and sometimes can be hard for its consumers to find.

Hence, its full store directory helps buyers check plenty of sub-categories and select what they need within a single page.

Amazon Full Store Directory Can Help You Discover Profitable Blogging Niches

The above screenshot corroborates USA based Amazon.com; however, you can check your country based Amazon site.

On this page, you can find 100s of different product categories that you can target as your blog niche.

Go through all of them or look into the head category that interests you to find multiple niche ideas.

These options can act as your seed niche ideas that you can further refine to come up with blog topics.

Approach 2: Amazon's best sellers list

Whenever I want to start a product or product category based website; I always make sure to check the Amazon Best Sellers list.

The fundamental use of Amazon Best Sellers list is to put of best-selling products on Amazon depending on main categories and multiple sub-categories within it.

Amazon's bestseller page gives hidden yet profitable niche ideas
Amazon Best Sellers Page Can Help You Pick A Niche You Are Passionate About

Once you open Amazon's Best Sellers page, multiple head categories are listed on the left sidebar.

Since I'm interested in Computers, I'll click on 'Computers & Accessories' link.

A new page opens up that again shows multiple sub-categories within it.

Later on, I'll click on 'Computer Accessories & Peripherals' because that's what interests me further.

This again opens up multiple product categories, here I'll select 'Game Hardware,' and within that, I'll choose 'Gaming Keyboards' as my Blog Niche for the purpose of this tutorial.

Profitable Niche, eh?

You can try this approach to burrow down on your niche ideas because Amazon lists out even the smallest of the smallest sub-categories on their site.

Secondly, you'll get popular product ideas within that category, which you can later monetize your site via Amazon Associates program.

If the above strategy doesn't satisfy your needs or you want to research further; my next strategy will surely blow your mind.

3 Use Wikihow.com for multiple blog niche ideas

Wikihow.com is a very popular website that posts innumerable how-to guides on performing simple and complex tasks related to everything and anything.

Stick around and I will show you how to generate 100s of blog niche ideas from each single category of Wikihow (and it has a ton of categories!).

To find more blog niche ideas using Wikihow:

  1.   Go to Wikihow.com.
  2.   Hover your mouse pointer on 'Explore' in its header.
  3.   Select the 'Categories' tab, which will open up a special page that lists all the main categories Wikihow writes about.
  4.   Scroll down the categories to find ones that interest you and click on it.
  5.   I'll select 'Computer and Electronics' because that's what interests me.
  6.   Once the page is open, you can see an exhaustive list of articles posted on the site related to those categories, if you prefer; go through them.
  7.   Next, under the 'Related Topics' section in the right sidebar, you'll find a comprehensive list of narrow niches that you can use to start your blog.
Getting 100s of blog niche ideas using Wikihow's category and sub category lists
100+ blog niche ideas from categories and sub categories of Wikihow

I know, at first it may seem a bit daunting looking at all those categories; but trust me; if you go over through them one-by-one it won't seem like a complex task.

The best part here is; once you find a topic that interests you, you can click on it and find a bunch of article ideas too for your niche site.

Sound's good?

4 Checkout PayPal's business categories & subcategories index

Another smart move you can do to ease your process of blog niche selection is to browse through PayPal's business categories page.

Find most profitable blog niches using PayPal's Business categories and Sub categories

It lists over 300 possible business options that can give you a headstart to find a parent niche.

You can further use this list to refine and come up with sub niche ideas or blog topics that work.

5 Use James Altucher's Idea Sex Formula to find hidden niches

James Altucher's idea sex formula is kickass way to discover new and profitable blogging niches with low competition.

Here is a backstory to help you understand about the formula:

Stan Weston pondered how girls liked dolls and boys loved cars and guns (action).

He merged these two ideas to come up with a doll for boys that was based on a soldier (doll) with a gun (action).

He named it GI Joe which is now a billion dollar franchise owned by Hasbro.

The idea was simple:

  1. Take two unrelated ideas
  2. Merge them to find a new, undiscovered product

You can use this exact formula to come up with new or low competition blog niches. This will also help you to create an independent identity for your blog.

All you have to do is:

  1. Make 2 lists of unrelated niches that have demand (you can use sub-markets too)
  2. Amalgamate or combine them to find hidden, unexplored blog topics.
  3. Keyword research to find more micro niches and ideas to blog about.

For example,

  • Health + Food = Healthy food or Keto diet or Paleo diet or Low carb nutrition
  • Mom life + Business = Mom life business or work from home for mothers or mompreneurs.

The possibilities are endless, isn't it?

Every year, Google releases a report on what was trending or what topics got the most people searching for through the whole year.

The Year in Search list is insightful in itself and gives you a bird's eye view of what topics excited people, how their thinking is shaping and lot more.

How to pick blog niches that make money using Google's Year In Search

But, since we are bloggers, you can also use this list to find what topics got the most searches in the previous year.

Most of these topics will keep getting huge traffic even the following year. You can use this data to find niches that you can refine (using a keyword research tool) to find even more sub niches or micro niches.

Be sure to validate your niche idea (we will discuss how below) before finalizing it.

7 Use ClickBank to find blog niches and micro niches for affiliate sites

ClickBank is an affiliate marketplace with a vast range of products to sell. You can use this as a chance to find niches and micro niches in your industry.

Another advantage of using ClickBank as a niche idea generator is you will get a validated list of niches that work.

How, you ask?

Because, ClickBank only has those categories that have products you can promote and sell. And if there is someone creating a product for a certain niche, it is sure to have some market demand.

You can also click on a specific micro niche to view affiliate products and how they are selling.

To get niche ideas from ClickBank:

  1. Go to ClickBank.com
  2. Click on affiliate marketplace in the navigation
  3. View and expand various categories of products on the left hand side panel.

8 Use Udemy to find unlimited niche ideas for blogging

Udemy, like Amazon or ClickBank can open up new avenues of money making blog niche ideas.

Udemy is a learning platform with over 100,000+ online courses in every possible subject you can imagine.

Udemy has got a vast list of courses (which you can take as market or sub market to further generate niche ideas from them)

This can not only be leveraged to find niches and micro niches but also used to validate your niche's popularity based on the number of course takers and people who have rated the course.

Here's how to use Udemy for niche research:

  1. Go to Udemy's Homepage
  2. Hover over the categories option in the navigation menu.
  3. Select a market and hover over to open up niches and micro niches under that market.
  4. You can also click on any option you think is a good choice for your blog niche and view the courses under it. Udemy shows the number of students that have taken courses for that particular topic. You can also view courses and see the number of ratings to see a course's popularity.

9 Use Pat Flynn's 777 method

Pat Flynn is one of the leading bloggers who has grown his blogging business to 7-figures and his 777 method to find blog niche ideas is something that works every single time.

Generate Niche Ideas That Make Money With Pat Flynn's 777 Method
Generate Niche Ideas That Make Money With Pat Flynn's 777 Method

Here's what Pat Flynn's 777 method to find blog niche ideas is:

  1. Make a list of your top 7 passions, 7 problems and 7 fears on a piece of paper or a mind mapping software.
  2. Out of the 21 potential niche ideas that you have, pick your top 10.
  3. Plug the 10 resultant items into a keyword research tool (like KWFinder which is free for limited use) or SEMrush trial) to further expand them into more micro niches.

This method works even better if you know your target audience.

For example,

If you have a basic idea of who you want to be the reader of your blog you can add the 777 method to find their passions, fears and problems and find blog topics they would care to read about.

10 Use forum directories to find low-competition blog niche ideas

Forum directories are a very efficient and often overlooked method to find niches that have people talking about.

You's be surprised by how much data they give away to you and will often end up discovering niches you never thought would exist. Most of them with a huge audience!

Here is how I use forums to discover hidden blog niches:

  1. Go to Find A Forum
  2. Or click here to go to the direct list of top 100 forums in their list.
  3. Click on forums that interest you to find more about them including number of posts, topics of discussion and much more.
  4. FindAForum also reveals top keywords, demonetization strategies and related forums to explore down the rabbit hole.
  5. If you're tired of competitive niches this is a good idea to discover some fresh profitable niche markets.

Pro Tip:  Use a SEO tool like SERPstat or SEMrush (both offer free trials so no need to invest money) to further find out the top ranking pages of these forums and the keywords that bring them the most organic (from Google) traffic.

11 Use newspapers, magazines & malls as niche research tools

Need more inspiration to decide what to blog about?

Other than the above methods you can always use newspapers, magazines and even stroll your local malls to find niche market opportunities and niche products to blog about.

Finding niche ideas isn't always straightforward as I mentioned earlier. Sometimes, you'll find awesome ideas for your blogging niche when you aren't looking for one.

Once you have a sizeable list of niche ideas for blogs that interest you; move over to the next section.

How to decide what to blog about: Niche validation

If you worked your way through the above 10 methods, I am sure you must be having a long list of blogging niches to work on.

That is where the confusion creeps in. You might be thinking what should I blog about?

Not all of them might interest you and not all of them would be profitable to go with.

That's why you need to validate your niche ideas and funnel down on 4-5 ideas within your list that interest you the most.

Picking up a blog niche without validating it's potential is the biggest blogging mistake beginners make.

These niche ideas should be the ones that spark your interest immediately, you have experience in it and something on which you can write multitude of articles comfortably.

Now it's time to test your blog niches and see which is the best niche for blogging.

Ready?

The initial idea here is to find a collection of blog topics (commonly referred to as keywords) that you can write articles on your blog.

Following steps will help you understand the viability of your niche ideas and which one you should work on.

Google trends gives you an idea about how popular a topic or keyword is over time.

Google trends provides search trends for a keyword since 2004 so you can get a full picture about your chosen niche.

You can even get data based on a country or subregion.

This data can be used to validate how popular your niche is over a given period of time and what is the trend of searches for it.

You can also compare two or more niches to see what has more promising results.

For the sake of example, let's take two related health & nutrition niche ideas:

  • Keto diet
  • Paleo diet

While both seem to interest you, and both ticked all the boxes of your passion, skills, demand & profit, Google trends reveals a complete different story.

A search demand trends analysis for Keto diet compared to Paleo diet shows Keto diet is way more popular and has an ongoing growth spike whereas Paleo diet a dying curve.

How to validate your niche using Google trends
Keto Diet vs Paleo Diet (Which niche should you go after?)

Paleo definitely doesn't seem to be a good niche to create a long-term blog.

You can go a step further to validate the profitability of your niche by filtering the above niche to display Google Shopping Trends for both.

Niche validation using Google trends
Niche validation using Google Shopping Trends

As you can see above, Google shopping trends suggest there is a huge difference in buying intent of both the niches and Keto diet is a clear winner.

That's why I strongly recommend using Google Trends to validate your niche before thinking to start blogging or even registering your domain name on it.

If you prefer videos, here is an awesome tutorial to use Google Trends to come up with hot topic ideas.

2 Use Ubersuggest to find broad article ideas

Ubersuggest is a tool that you'll frequently use in your blogging career to do keyword research, and it's also a great tool to find article ideas.

I have selected 'Gaming Keyboards' as my niche for this tutorial; hence, I'll go ahead with it.

Once you open Ubersuggest, enter your blog niche (commonly referred to as main keyword) within the input box, select your country and click on 'Search.'

Once the search is complete, you can see the keyword I selected has 'Search Volume' of 90,500. This means that the particular keyword is searched approximately 90,500 times in a month on Google within the United States alone.

Numbers for your country might vary.

niche validation using Ubersuggest
Using Ubersuggest to validate niche

This indicates there's plenty of demand for this niche and a lot of people are searching for it.

It's possible your niche topic might not have such high search volume, but don't get disheartened because anything above 5000 searches/month is good to get started with.

Now click on 'Keyword Ideas' tab in the left sidebar, it shows a collection of keywords (article topics) related to the main keyword (niche topic).

Find related keywords based on your primary keyword (blog topic) using Ubersuggest
Find related keywords based on your primary keyword (blog topic) using Ubersuggest

Getting confused?

It's not as difficult as it seems.

Just follow these steps serially.

Take a rough look at the Keyword Ideas and see for yourself if the terms mentioned next to your main keyword seems familiar.

Once that's done, click on the 'Related' Tab; next to 'Suggestions' to get proper article ideas.

These related keyword or blog post ideas will give you an idea on what to blog about if you pick that niche.

I recommend this step to get an idea about the natural progression of information flow on your blog.

how to decide what to blog about using Ubersuggest
How to decide what to blog about using Ubersuggest

Note: If you don't see a lot of monthly search volume for your main term or related terms, then I'd suggest dropping that niche because of its low exposure.

On the other hand, presence of bigger authority sites (think of Techradar, think of Wirecutter) shows that there is profit in the market which is a good thing.

Using Ubersuggest, we can also find the main competitor sites we will be competing against in our niche.

Find competitor sites ranking for your keywords in your niche
Find competitor sites ranking for your keywords in your niche

However, as weird as it may sound, make sure you do have at least some room left for your entry.

The key to determine this is to see that some or most of the related keywords have an SEO Difficulty (SD as seen in image above) is less than 30-40. The lower the better, the higher the difficult are your chances to outrank your competitors on Google.

On the right-hand side; you can see a list of sites that have written about gaming keyboards.

Open those links one by one and get a rough feel of how the articles are written and what similar article topics are published on the site.

Note down these sites as they might be helpful while doing keyword research and also for competitor research.

Try this for other niche topics you have, and you'll get a rough idea of what niche seems suitable for you.

Now, to be honest; Ubersuggest doesn't give exact article ideas; the real plan here was to make you check the sustainability and popularity of your niche.

Now we'll move on to another website to validate our niche idea

3 Use AnswerThePublic to see what people ask about your niche

AnswerThePublic.com is a free keyword research and content idea tool that shows you questions readers search for based on the query you input.

Use AnswerThePublic.com to find keyword ideas
Use AnswerThePublic.com to find keyword ideas

Just like Ubersuggest.com, plug in your main keyword in the Input Box and click on 'Get Questions' and let the website do its magic.

Pro Tip: Install the free Google chrome extension called Keywords Everywhere to get an estimated count of these searches every month. This should help you gauge the popularity of a topic.

Once the search is completed, you'll find mind maps filled with keywords. Though don't get worried and click on 'Data' tab

Know what people search on Google in your niche using AnswerThePublic
Know what people search on Google in your niche

Here you'll see multiple modifiers added to the front of your main keyword and proper formation of article topics compared to Ubersuggest.

Scroll down the entire page and click on Data tab in each section to get great article topic ideas and note down the ones that interest you.

Try it for all niche ideas you have, and you'll be left with a collection of article topic ideas for your website.

Select the one that interests you the most and finalize the niche for your website.

But wait…

4 How to validate if a niche is profitable or not

When locking in a niche, you need to make sure if that niche is profitable and it makes money.

Afterall, we are launching websites for business, for profit.

One quick way to validate is to use the same free tool called Ubersuggest and search for your primary keyword.

Check out the cost per click or CPC section. The higher the currency value (depending on the country you are targeting, usually US) the more profitable it is.

For example, a search for "gaming keyboards" returns a CPC of less than $0.5

Validate niche earning capacity using ad spend data
A low CPC niche indicates businesses aren't spending more in ads which means there isn't enough business

While a search for divorce lawyers returns a CPC of $28 (approx). Which means people pay up to $28 per click on paid advertisements (for divorce lawyers) on Google.

Find profitable blog niches using keyword research

What does this indicate?

It indicates that there is more money involved in the business and hence businesses are spending more money in client/customer acquisition.

This means if you're targeting ads, affiliate products to promote or simply sell your services, the second niche might be more profitable.

Also, a niche that has a decent SEO competition always has the types of blogs that make money unlike one that no one searches for.

Blog niches that make money are usually the ones with most competition.

Currently, there are 3 popular ways to monetize your blog:

  • Display Ad Network (Google Adsense, Media.net, Propeller Ads)
  • Amazon Associates Program
  • Affiliate Marketing

Or, you can read my guide on how to make money with a blog for beginners to discover more ways to monetize your blog.

Remember the sites that I told you to note down above?

Check those sites once again and see what monetization strategy they are using.

  • Are they using ads on their website?
  • What products are they promoting?
  • Are they promoting any affiliate offers? Like a course or online service

Remember about Amazon's Bestsellers list that I asked you to take a rough look?

You can again take a proper look and check popular products within that niche that you can easily promote on your blog.

Same goes for ClickBank.

You get the idea, right?

Moving on, with the help of Google, you can also check various affiliate program related to your niche:

Try queries like "[Your Niche] affiliate programs" or "Best Affiliate program for [Your Niche]" (without quotes).

For example, Gaming Keyboards Affiliate Program or Best Affiliate Program for Gaming Keyboards.

Using Google to find affiliate programs to monetize your blog
